How to Apply DRYLOK Etch
How to Apply DRYLOK® Etch
Preparation

Wear eye protection with side shields, chemical-resistant gloves, protective footwear and suitable clothing when using DRYLOK® Etch. Remove dirt, dust, grease and oil by washing with a detergent solution*. Allow the surface to dry before applying DRYLOK® Etch.

Application

GENERAL CLEANING/REMOVING EFFLORESCENCE
Surface Preparation: Using a steel brush, scrub and remove as much dirt, efflorescence, and dust as possible. Mixing: Dissolve 12 oz. of DRYLOK® Etch in 1 gallon of warm water using a plastic container. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection. Application: Pre-wet the surface. If working in large areas, work in 4’x4’ areas at a time. Thoroughly wash and rinse each section before moving on. Improper rinsing will allow DRYLOK® Etch to recrystallize on the surface and look like efflorescence. Multiple water rinses may be required. Note: If treating surface for efflorescence, only treat areas where efflorescence is present.

ETCHING CONCRETE BEFORE FLOOR PAINT OR EPOXY TOP COATS
Surface Preparation: Sweep away all loose dirt and debris. Clean and remove oil spots and spills, wash the floor with a suitable detergent or degreasing solution, and rinse thoroughly. Mixing: Dissolve 12 oz. of DRYLOK® Etch in 12 gallon of warm water using a plastic container. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection. Application: Allow new concrete to cure for a minimum of 28 days. Etch with a stiff bristle brush and make sure the areas stay wet during the process. For floors, pay close attention to areas where vehicle tires usually sit. Continue scrubbing while rinsing to ensure all contaminants are washed away. It is best to work in small sections, completing one section at a time. Properly etched surface will feel like medium grit sandpaper, improving adhesion of coatings. When all surfaces are dry, be sure no evidence of DRYLOK® Etch solution remains. Allow surfaces to dry completely before coating.

FAQs

Q. Which products help remove efflorescence and prevent it from reoccurring?

A. United Gilsonite Laboratories manufactures a product called DRYLOK® Etch. While DRYLOK® Etch will remove efflorescence and help prevent it from reoccurring, understand that efflorescence comes from salt deposits found in the block itself and can reoccur at any time.
