That makes early fall an excellent time to plan a sealing project, provided there is enough warm, dry weather for the product to properly cure.

How to Apply a Masonry Sealer
Proper preparation is just as important as choosing the right sealer.
1. Inspect the Surface
Look for cracks, damaged mortar joints, loose material, peeling coatings, stains, efflorescence, and areas where water may be collecting.
Repair cracks and damaged areas with an appropriate masonry or concrete repair product and allow repairs to cure as directed.
2. Clean the Masonry
Remove dirt, dust, grease, oil, mildew, loose material, and other contaminants. Efflorescence — those white, powdery mineral deposits often seen on masonry — should also be removed because it can interfere with the sealer’s ability to bond or penetrate properly.
For example, it’s recommended to clean and, where appropriate, etch surfaces before applying several of its clear sealers.
3. Make Sure the Surface Is Dry
Don’t rush this step, especially in fall.
Masonry can look dry on the surface while still holding moisture below the surface. We recommend a moisture test for certain concrete applications using a taped piece of plastic or aluminum foil; if moisture is present after 24 hours, additional drying time is needed.

4. Apply the Sealer Evenly
Depending on the product, application methods can include a brush, roller, sprayer, pad applicator, or squeegee.
Apply a thin, even coat and avoid puddles or excessive buildup. Extremely porous surfaces may require an additional coat, depending on the product directions.
5. Allow Adequate Drying and Curing Time
Don’t judge the project by whether the surface simply “feels dry.” Dry time and full cure time can be different.
For example, DRYLOK® Concrete Protector is dry to the touch in approximately 45 minutes, but full cure can take 24 – 48 hours. DRYLOK® WetLook has a one-hour dry time, while automobile traffic should be avoided for 72 – 96 hours.
This is particularly important when sealing in the fall. Give the product enough time to cure before rain, freezing temperatures, or heavy traffic arrive.
