Getting Organized for 2023: Top Storage Solutions and Strategies

2023 Organization: Best Storage Solutions & Strategies

As 2023 rolls along, it’s the perfect time to declutter your space and breathe a sigh of relief from a well-organized home. Whether it’s the garage that’s become a dumping ground or the basement that’s silently pleading for a revamp, we’ve got the top storage solutions and strategies to help you get started!

Assessing Your Storage Needs

Before you begin, take a moment to assess your storage needs. Consider which items are worth keeping and which ones need to be let go. It’s not just about creating space — it’s about making room for the things that matter.

Before Diving In, Verify That Your Basement is Properly Waterproofed

An essential first step to any basement storage strategy is ensuring proper waterproofing. This not only protects your space but safeguards your stored items as well.

Cleaning and Removing Efflorescence

First, let’s tackle that pesky white, powdery substance on your walls known as efflorescence. DRYLOK® Concrete and Masonry Liquid Etch & Cleaner is your go-to product for this task. It helps remove efflorescence and creates an etched surface, perfect for any waterproofing product to adhere to.

Using this product is quite straightforward. First, you’ll want to clear away any loose or peeling paint and any efflorescence. A stiff bristle brush is great for this job. Once that’s done, liberally apply the DRYLOK Concrete and Masonry Liquid Etch & Cleaner with a synthetic bristle brush or roller, or you could even use a low-pressure sprayer. The key is to let it soak into the surface — no need to rush.

After the Liquid Etch has soaked in for about 20 – 30 minutes, rinse the surface thoroughly with clean water. This step is vital — it neutralizes the etching action and prepares the surface for a fresh coat of DRYLOK Masonry Waterproofer. With DRYLOK Concrete and Masonry Liquid Etch & Cleaner, you get a two-in-one solution.

It not only cleans your masonry surfaces but also etches,” or roughens, them. This etching makes the surface more adhesive for waterproofing paint or other coatings you want to apply.

Filling Major Cracks

DRYLOK Fast Plug® is a hydraulic cement that sets quickly within 3 to 5 minutes, hence the name Fast Plug.” It’s ideal for patching large cracks and holes, as it expands to lock into place and provide a watertight seal.

Before using DRYLOK Fast Plug, make sure to remove any loose or crumbling concrete around the crack. Dampen the area, but ensure there’s no standing water.

Remember, the preparation is just as vital as the application!

Mix a small amount of DRYLOK Fast Plug with water until it has a putty-like consistency. Apply the mix using a trowel, and push the material firmly into the crack or hole. Overfill slightly to allow for shrinkage and smooth it out while it’s still pliable. You have to be quick — you only have 3 to 5 minutes before the mix hardens!

Reapply DRYLOK Fast Plug if necessary and repeat the process until the crack is entirely sealed and flush with the surrounding surface.

Filling Minor and Hairline Cracks

Not all cracks in your concrete and masonry surfaces are cause for major concern. Minor and hairline cracks, while not posing structural threats, can still be an eyesore and invite moisture and pests if left untreated. Here’s where DRYLOK® Masonry Crack Filler steps in.

This picture shows a 10.5 fl oz sized DRYLOK Masonry Crack Filler.

DRYLOK Masonry Crack Filler is designed specifically for smaller cracks, and it provides a simple, efficient solution for maintaining the look and integrity of your walls. It’s a ready-mixed formula, which means you don’t have to worry about measuring or mixing — it’s all ready to go!

Before applying the DRYLOK Masonry Crack Filler, clean out the crack to remove any loose material. This ensures a smooth, seamless finish once the filler is applied.

Using a standard caulking gun, apply the DRYLOK Masonry Crack Filler directly into the crack. It’s as simple as that! Overfill the crack slightly, then smooth out the filler with a putty knife to make sure it blends in well with the surrounding surface.

One of the key benefits of this product is its latex-based formula. This means it dries to a smooth, paintable finish that allows you to cover it up seamlessly with your choice of waterproofing paint or other coatings.
